Within innate immunity, the two major mechanisms of response to virus infections are: the synthesis of type I interferons (IFN-I) and the elimination of infected cells by NK lymphocytes. To produce type I interferons, it will be necessary for the cell to recognize the viral PAMPs through the PRR receptors found on the cell surface (TLR 4 and some CLRs), in the endosomes (TLR 3, 7, 8 and 9) or in the cytosol (RIG-I and MDA5), which may differ between different types of viruses. Following the production of IFNs-I, these will lead to the infected cell, as well as those nearby to mount an antiviral state, which will lead to the production of antiviral proteins to eradicate the infection. On the other hand, NK lymphocytes destroy virus-infected cells after sensing and recognizing that they no longer express MHC (major histocompatibility complex) class I molecules on their surface by releasing their cytotoxic mediators.
