The alternative methods of taxonomic identification come from the development of molecular techniques based on the identification and analysis of nucleic acids. These methods have given a great impulse to the epidemiological investigation of human tuberculosis by providing tools that allow identifying, to compare and obtain the genomic pattern of strains from different populations. The aim of the present review is to provide an overview of the possibilities for diagnosis and identification of highly pathogenic organisms, such as mycobacteria, thus allowing faster treatment establishment to reduce mortality rates by TB. The present work was developed through the compilation of bibliographical information related to the subject, allowing correlating the information of several expert authors
